Where do you train? USA – Fiore MMA

What are your strengths as a fighter?
I’m well rounded and I train in all areas.

Why do you think you’ve made it into The Smashes?
Hard work and effort, especially over the past 12 months.

How / why did you start training in MMA? I was coming back from a soccer injury and it was a way to lose weight.  I started doing Jiu-Jitsu and a bit of sparring to get back into shape and fell in love with the sport.

How long have you been training in MMA? 2.5 years

Why do you love MMA? It’s not a 9-5 job and it’s an outlet for testosterone and a way to lose myself, every day of the week. The other thing I love about this sport is it's not a team sport.  Once you're in that cage it's just you and the other guy.  It comes down to you being better than that guy on the day and that's the best thing about it.  There are no excuses.  You can't blame anyone else if something goes wrong.

Why do you think you will be the next Ultimate Fighter? Because of the time I have spent travelling and the people I have travelled and trained with. My experience was kind of fast-tracked as I’ve made MMA my focus and I have been living and training in the US so I have invested a lot of my own time and money into this.

I’ve made a lot of sacrifices over the last couple of years, pretty much cut all my friends out of my life so I can focus on my career as a fighter.  I've got a few friends I still talk to.  But I used to be in hospitality and bartend and basically I stopped partying, I stopped all other sport that I was doing just to focus 100 per cent on fighting and try and fast track myself to where I am today and it's paying off.
Do you think the Australia / UK rivalry is going to affect the competition?  The POMs have got The Ashes right now, so we can't let them get this one.  I think they're going to be hanging off that a bit just because it's the first Smashes.  I think things are going to boil over in the house at some stage.  But I think we're going to get on top honestly.

Do you have any heroes? UFC fighter Chael Sonnen – he’s articulate and walks the walk.

What / who inspires you? My wife Shonel – she owns her own restaurants and is living her dream, she supports me and my dreams too.  Another person who inspires me is my coach, Marc Fiore – he welcomed me openly into his home, he’s a good father figure and has many accomplishments I admire.

What would a contract to fight in the UFC mean to you?
It’s my dream. It would allow me to travel less and be more available to my family. Honestly my goal is to have a UFC contract.  It's like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.  It's what gets me up every morning and lets me get to the gym every day and be punched in the face every day in order to get better.  So that's where this journey the last few years has taken me.

Can you tell us about your family? My wife and I have a boy on the way, she is due in November.  I have 8 brothers and 3 sisters and they range in ages from 13-31 years old. They all live in Brisbane. We operate well for such a big family.

Can you tell us about your previous fights? I beat Mauro Chimentu in Beirut, Lebanon in Feb 2012. It pretty much put me on the radar because he is from a world-famous grappling team.

How do you rate your chances in The Smashes? Very good to excellent – I’m too much for the POMs!

What are you most excited about now that you’re in The Ultimate Fighter? Free rent! Plus, being part of the first Aussies group is a great opportunity.

Who is / are your favourite UFC fighter/s? Chael Sonnen and Brian Ebersole.

Anything unusual / quirky that you would like people to know about you?
•    I got my nickname ‘Blanco’ when I was in camp at the HIT squad in the US at Matt Hughes' gym.  We had actually finished watching the movie Carlito's Way. We went and had a workout in the gym after watching the film and I started reciting a few lines during a session.  The boys started calling me Carlito's Way and when we looked around, I was the only white guy in the gym at the time so it kind of stuck from there.
A couple of times I've been mistaken for other UFC fighters.  I've got Forrest Griffin - well his little brother actually.  I don’t know if he has a little brother or not but I went with it.  I've also been asked if I am Rich Franklin a couple of times but I think I'm way better looking than both those two guys.
