When and why did you start training for fighting? I first began training when I was 14, mainly for the fact it was the only sport I didn’t get kicked out of. It was a way for me to work out some of my anger and next thing I knew I turned pro when I was 16 and I found my calling in life.
What ranks and titles have you held? Former UFC middleweight champion, King of the Cage middleweight belt, black belt in BJJ
What fight do you consider the key fight in your career? The Usman fight. That was the fight that I learned jiu jitsu doesn’t work and you need to get up.
Who is your favorite fighter and why? I don’t have a favorite fighter, but I respect the old-school fighters the most. People who showed up, fought hard, and didn’t make excuses.
Do you have any heroes outside of fighting? Not really heroes. I respect people who’ve been through real adversity and didn’t let it break them. Anyone who takes responsibility for their life and keeps moving forward has my respect.
What are your current ranks in martial arts? Black Belt in BJJ
Is there a cause that you want to use your platform for? I just want to give back to my fans. They have allowed me to make a life out of this sport. Without them I would probably be in prison somewhere.
Beyond a championship and money, what motivates you? Besides money, my motivation to fight is for my fans. They are the reason I get to train every day and still pay my bills.
What was your job before you started fighting? I turned pro when I was 16. I’ve always been a fighter.
Favorite Striking technique: Not getting punched in the face technique
Tell us about your life outside of fighting: I keep my life simple. I train, I spend time with my dogs, I shoot, I ride motorcycles.
What is one thing you want UFC fans to know about you? What you see is what you get. I’m not playing a character. I fight hard, I speak honestly, and I show up every time.
